Automotive, Magnesium Injection Molding (Thixomolding®), Lightweight Components

The Challenge

To machine thin-walled magnesium brackets for automotive interior displays on HAAS milling machines, LTC needed stable, low-vibration clamping. A hydraulic fixture would have required additional hydraulic connections. Workpiece removal also had to protect the parts’ sensitive surfaces.

The Solution

The pneumatic High-Power solution with WNC work supports and WCE link clamps simplified integration with the milling machines, avoided the additional effort of a hydraulic fixture and supported stable machining of thin-walled magnesium parts. WHA swing clamps were later introduced at selected positions to make workpiece removal easier and reduce the risk of surface damage.

The Results

Quantitative Outcomes

No hydraulic connections required on the HAAS milling machines for the pneumatic clamping fixture.

Qualitative Outcomes

The pneumatic solution simplified integration and reduced installation, maintenance and operating costs compared with a hydraulic solution. Adding WHA swing clamps at key positions later made manual workpiece removal easier and reduced the risk of surface damage.

The Key Benefits

  • Easy integration without additional hydraulic connections and with lower installation costs
  • Stable machining of thin-walled magnesium parts
  • Lower maintenance and operating costs than a hydraulic solution
  • Easier workpiece removal with less risk of surface damage
